In today’s world, stress is at an all time high for most people. It’s not a surprise when you consider the amount of work our brain is doing in this age of technology and information overload.

Being connected to our devices 24/7, working longer days and having the expectation of being available at all hours for your clients, boss and people in your life, is a stress on the brain that didn’t exist under a decade ago. When you add in the fact that we’re consuming so much information and making so many minor decisions everyday on social media, it’s no wonder that most of us are walking around in a constant state of brain fatigue.

The Problem with Brain Fatigue

The problem with brain fatigue is that it makes it very hard for us to manage our emotions. We have less energy to handle stress, so we become more reactive and susceptible to any form of it.

As we get exhausted throughout the day, personal insecurities can surface. These personal issues often stem from beliefs that were formed in our childhood and due to our unique personality type. It’s just the way we are wired.

These underlying thought patterns are what cause us to mismanage our time, to lack patience for those around us, to be disorganized, to feel dissatisfied with life or to simply get down on ourselves easily and experience self-doubt.

If we are unaware of these underlying thought patterns that dictate every thought, feeling and action we take; then we have no way of addressing them and they will always hold us back a bit.

How to Take Control of Your Life

I truly believe that the most frustrating thing in life is when we want to improve or change something about ourselves, but we don’t know how. No matter how hard we try, we just can’t seem to make it work.

My mission has been to help you become self-reliant; so you can control the thoughts in your head, trust in yourself to change things that aren’t working and create the life you desire…and this all starts with self-awareness.

To become self-aware, I suggest taking some personality tests online. They are inexpensive and incredibly powerful. Below I will list which ones I believe are the best, however you want to make sure you do the following three things, otherwise it will impact your results.

Before taking the tests read this!

  • Look for the patterns in multiple tests. Realize that the tests are not going to be 100% accurate. This is why I believe it’s important to take multiple personality tests so you can spot the patterns. After a while you will begin to see what behaviors are accurate (often times they are the ones you didn’t even know existed)
  • Don’t take them all at once. Take 1 or 2 each week at most. Give yourself time to learn each one and go throughout your life to see if those things are in fact accurate.
  • Take them when you are in a decent mood! I took one of these tests twice. The first time, I was in a bad mood. I can remember going through and saying to myself “what a stupid question” or “that question is just like the last one, why are they asking it again!”…. needless to say when I took the tests when I was in a better mood, my results were quite a bit different.

The Power Behind Personality Tests

The reason these tests can offer such good insight into your life is because it will help identify your natural self. The things you prefer at work and in life, the activities that come naturally to you and what truly drives your unconscious behavior. By being aware of this, you will be able to recognize what is missing in life and how to fix it.

For example: On the DISC Profile test, if it states that you are someone who highly prefers structure and routine in your work environment and is resistant to change; then it might explain why you are always stressed out or dissatisfied with your job if you are at a high flying, fast paced start-up or if you are always working on the road.

Or if in the Enneagram test it states that you are naturally someone who doesn’t trust in yourself. Someone who always second guesses their decisions and is prone to a low level of anxiety; then you are going to realize that this is what could be impacting your relationships, work and life in general. Then you can take necessary actions they suggest to help solve that specific issue that is at the core of your challenges.

Myers & Briggs:

This test costs $49 and is used by a lot of organizations worldwide and focuses much around how we use our perception and judgement.

Big 5:

This test is free and is based on the Five Factor model of personality, one of the most widely accepted theories of personality today. The Five Factor model scores people based on five broad dimensions of personality:

  • Conscientiousness – How much do you put off immediate gratification in order to achieve long-term goals?
  • Extraversion – How much do you turn to the outside world for stimulation and excitement?

  • Neuroticism – How likely are you to bounce back from stressful events?
